Vegetation Management And Free Chipping Program

May 20, 2025

Property owners have a year-round responsibility and obligation to maintain vegetation on their property in a condition that will not contribute to the spread of fire. If you see violations of our abatement standards, please go to the “file a hazard complaint” below and report it. Effective fire prevention measures can keep fires from starting and reduce hazards that threaten yours and your neighbors’ property.

The Hayward Fire Department, in partnership with the Fairview Fire Protection District, has launched a new online Defensible Space Inspection Portal. This tool enables property owners to conveniently access and track the results of their annual property inspections. As part of our ongoing commitment to fire safety, abatement "windshield" surveys are conducted at least once per year. A unique property code is required to access your inspection results; this code is generated only after the inspection has been completed. If you wish to be notified via email of your results, go to the Defensible Space Inspection Portal below and follow the prompts provided. You will only be mailed an abatement notice with instructions on what to abate if your inspection resulted in violations to be addressed.
